The Fake Marketer – the beginning
In October of 2010, I wrote an article for Marketing Magazine about a certain networking function I attended. At this function, I was introduced to a wide range of people, two of which really stuck out for me. One told me they were an ‘Internet Marketer’ and the other a ‘Client Attraction Specialist.’ Despite no industry certification or qualifications, both claimed to be marketers and I left the event irate at just how many people claim to be professionals when they really have no idea.
I’m sure this happens in a lot of fields but it seems to be rampant in marketing. People have a misguided idea that anyone can be a marketer but it’s simply not true.
After I had this article published, I received many emails on people who had experience the exact same frustrations as I and I became even more frustrated. Not long after, I had mentally dubbed these people Fake Marketers and was on a private mission to disarm them.
The Fake Marketer
My experience at this networking event is telling of just how many disguises fake marketers use. From sales agents who have been promoted to business executive with marketing tasks to graphic designers who think they’re marketing, I’ve come across them all.
Obviously this is a problem for professional marketers who may have clients taken away from them by fakes, but on a larger scale, I see it as a problem for marketing as a profession. The myth that anyone can be a marketer leaves the integrity of marketing as an industry on the chopping block.
On another level, start-up businesses who waste time and money on a service that is not done correctly, risking their own success.
Luckily fake marketers disguises are easily unveiled. So, as a part of my mission to educated the masses, I have just completed an e-book entitled ‘Beware the Fake Marketer’ that outlines all the tricks fakes use to lure in clients.
Throughout the ebook many warning signs of fakes are identified and there is a quick checklist at the end of the ebook that anyone involved in marketing at all should look over. If you are a marketer, these are the things that will ensure you appear to be a legimate professional, if you are hiring a marketer, these are the most basic requirements you should be checking off to ensure you hire someone worthy.
Stay tuned to my blog over the coming weeks, it’s going to be a journey of discovery that ends with the know-how to rid your world of fake marketers forever.
