The 3 Main Types of Content You Should Use for Social Media Marketing

POSTED: December 9, 2015 BY: CATEGORY:

Content can make or break any social media marketing campaign. Great content can boost your followers and get shared across networks while mediocre content may get you ignored or even lose you followers. While its important to post regularly and consistently on your social media pages, it can be difficult to come up with ideas on a continuous basis.

Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast rule for exactly what you should post and how often. The best content for you will depend on your target audience and type of business. Taking a strategic approach and planning out your social media content can help you ensure a good balance of different content types and let you keep track of what type of posts get you the best results.

While it’s easy to focus on written content when you’re posting on social media, it’s actually a good idea to use a number of different content types and formats including images, video, interactive surveys and written articles or posts.

Social media content can be divided into three rough categories:

  1. 1. Every day content

Your standard run of the mill posts and updates will probably form the mainstay of your content marketing strategy. These include topical content that relates to current affairs or events, as well as more general content. The purpose of this type of content is to engage your followers and encourage conversation.

  1. 2. Promotional content

This is content that is designed to promote your business in some way or other. Promotional content usually has a limited lifespan and includes competitions, giveaways, seasonal discounts and anything else that’s designed to promote your business. This content shouldn’t form the bulk of your strategy but it should definitely be included on a regular basis.

  1. 3. Content series or links

Releasing a series of articles on a single topic or content focusing on a certain theme can build engagement and interest among your social media followers. This type of content is easy to prepare ahead of time and then automate to go out at set intervals.

It’s usually a good idea to create a mixture of different content types to ensure variation and make sure your followers don’t get bored. Try a combination of the three different types and see which ones resonate the most with your audience. Once you know the best content to post you can approach your social media marketing strategy with confidence.
