Forbes Top 25 Disruptor #12: Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift is one of the most influential pop stars around today with over six billion views on her YouTube page and estimated to be worth over $200 million. Taylor Swift is not just your average pop singer though, she’s not afraid to use her huge social media following and fan base to call for change and challenge the status quo, especially when it comes to fair treatment of artists and musicians.
Taylor Swift may only be 26 but she has already taken on some of the biggest companies over their music streaming services and won. She pulled her entire music catalogue out of streaming service Spotify and then wrote an open letter to Apple requesting that they pay artists during the Apple Music free trial period (they had previously said they wouldn’t).
This letter was picked up and shared over social media by her huge number of followers. Apple were forced to comply with her request or face a huge publicity nightmare and backlash over their at that time soon to be released Apple Music service.
By taking on Apple and winning, Taylor Swift put the power back in the musician’s hands rather than the big music companies’.
