How to make your Shopping Cart suck less!

As a regular purchaser online, I have a strong opinion about shopping carts and online shopping in general. In fact, at a lunch I attended recently I discussed with the table how I purchase my entire daughter’s clothes online and all of my friends who have toddlers about the same age, do so too. Apparently, it is this ‘group’ that is the biggest purchaser online in Australia…

Based on my personal experiences, I believe I have become a shopping cart connoisseur. So, when I found this site, I couldn’t help but like it.

For the record and in my opinion, Baby’s Got Style has the best search function and shopping cart of any Australian e-retailer? Agree? Can you suggest one here?

Debugged – Social Media Explained

Social Media has turned the world on its head. It’s almost impossible to believe that just six years ago the word ‘twitter’ wasn’t in our vocabulary and only eight years ago we would have thought a facebook was a book full of faces.

Today, I dare say the majority of the western world refers to at least one of them each day.

While these two social media portals are very commonly understood as being social media tools, there are many of us who still stumble when trying to define what exactly Social Media actually is and how important it is to business.

The Definition
Social media refers to digital social interaction. It allows anyone to view, share, comment on and discuss content.

The term is distinct from industrial media (e.g. newspapers, magazines and television) because it refers to the digital elements of media such as newspapers, television and film.

Put very simply, social media takes social interaction online.

Why it’s Necessary for Success
There are still many companies and individuals out there who are resisting the pull of social media. They are fooling themselves into believing this is something that will go away when really, it has become an important part of the way society functions and is sure to be around for years to come. It’s possible the popular social networking sites themselves will change but there is no doubt others will take their place.

Here is why social networking is such a great tool for our businesses:

·    Publicity: Today, people search for just about everything online. If a business cannot be found online there is no discussion or feedback from consumers, business consumers will question the businesses credibility.

·    Starting dialogue: It’s important to think of social media not just as an opportunity to broadcast your message but as a way for consumers to get involved with, connect with and give feedback to your business. Make it personable to encourage dialogue and you will find it both builds awareness and generates substantial feedback.

·    Finding Opportunity: By searching around on social media, you can find people who are searching for exactly what you have to offer. Not only that, but there is opportunity to collaborate or communicate with other businesses.

·    Famous Faces: Bloggers are no longer just glorified diary writers. Many bloggers have become nothing short of famous and they are more than willing to advertise something if they believe it is worth it. Should you find a blogger you believe would love your product; send it to them. A blog post about your product or service will generate more interest than you may realise. These people have a voice that consumers still see as more genuine than that of industrial media sources.

Find Your Hub
Facebook, LinkedIn, blogs and Twitter are by far the most popular social media tools out there. Consider how each one could work for your business and make them work for you.

Remember it’s not just about setting up a page and walking away.  For these things to become an asset to your company, you must be consistent in your efforts.

Australian retailers

There has been much press lately about the tax implications of buying online from overseas retailers. In my opinion, the simple fact is that ‘bricks and mortar’ retailers are forcing this onto consumers – here are some recent examples to demonstrate:

Major Bedding retailer –

Has a strict two week returns policy – where most online retailers offer at least 30 days

Major Baby retailer –

Asks customers to provide Photo ID, sign numerous documents and generally is unhappy to take goods back even when they are returned within their terms, with receipts and in saleable condition.  Most online retailers take returns – no questions asked.

Major apparel retailer –

This operation has an online and physical presence – those who purchase online and would like to exchange goods need to pay for postage back as well as a handling fee.  There are now online retailers who pay for the postage back and offer free returns – no questions asked.

Like many Australians now – I buy a substantial amount of goods each year online.  Why?  The above examples are just some of the reasons why.

Are you buying more goods online and bypassing the traditional bricks and mortar retailers?

It’s all about me remember!

In your business – it’s actually not about you at all – it’s all about your customers. Even when you are the business owner!

I was reminded of why this was so important recently…

Just prior to christmas I tried to make an appointment with a new local business – the timing wasn’t great and before i knew it my diary had filled up. I called the business and left a message to say that I wouldn’t be able to make the appointment that i had made – gave them plenty of notice so it wouldn’t inconvenience them etc… I then get three voice mails from the business within a day chasing me to make another appointment with them. Yep. On the 4th call – i spoke to them. The person at the other end said bluntly – “well I can only fit you in on this day before I go on holidays for christmas”. Like they were the only people busy prior to christmas…..

The lesson for me was that sales and marketing is not about you – the business or business owner at all. It is all about your customers. It really doesn’t matter what you have on – how busy you are or what your to do it list says that day – your customer is the most important thing to consider in all aspects of your sales and marketing program.

Whether it is 1-1 selling, an advertising campaign, e newsletter – the same simple message applies.
